This was no ordinary flourless chocolate orange cake.
It was a welcome-home-hubs-from-me-and-Dog flourless chocolate orange cake.
You see hubby had been away for over a week and I was pining. If you’re a regular reader you’ll know that I like to show my emotions through food (ie I’m a feeder) and I wanted something delicious to welcome him back to the household.
Dog was heavily in favour of a rotting bone, but I had the deciding vote and opted for this easy, gluten-free, incredibly moist chocolate cake.
After all, what’s more welcoming than the smell of freshly baked cake as you step through the doorway?
Flourless Chocolate Orange Cake
*adapted very slightly from Nigella Lawson
- 2 small thin-skinned oranges (I went for Navels. Buy organic if you can – you’re using the skins)
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 2 cups ground almonds
- 6 large eggs
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 cup honey
- Put the oranges in a pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and simmer for two hours until soft.
- Remove oranges, let cool, slice open, remove pips and dump everything (peel and all) into a food processor. Blend to a pulp.
- Transfer mixture to a large mixing bowl. Whisk in the eggs and honey. Sieve in the cocoa powder, baking powder and baking soda. Stir in the almonds and mix everything together well to form a runny batter.
- Pour into a greased or lined 20cm springform pan. Bake at 375 for 45 mins to an hour. Remove from tin when cool.

Thanks for this delicious looking recipe! I’ll have to make t for hubs as a “sorry for going away for a week” soon
Oooh, hope he likes. I firmly approve of showing love through cake

Mmmmmm…..this is the way to start off a week, cake for breakfast on a Monday!!! Thanks Ms. Cat.
Cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner. That’s the way I roll
I likes how U roll Ms. Cat. Enjoy a cool Prez Day.
thanks for the great and easy recipe! How critical do you think it is to cook the oranges first? I’m contemplating trying this with the oranges raw. Any thoughts on that?
Well cooking the oranges makes them nice and soft so helps with the blending. It also concentrates their flavour. You could try them raw, but I can’t vouch for the results!
Was that almond flour or almond nuts
I used some sliced almonds and ground them in a coffee grinder until powdery. Never cooked with almond flour (it’s too expensive round these parts)
I’m low carbing so I wondered if you had ever tried this recipe with stevia or another LC sweetener instead of honey?
Yep, I’d absolutely give that a go. Not sure about the equivalent quantities though – you might have to taste the batter as you go.
can anything else be used in place of the ground almonds? Maybe shredded coconut?
You could try it Alison but I can’t guarantee that the texture would hold up under baking. You could always be really cunning and just add chocolate/cocoa powder to my flourless carrot cake recipe.
I’m allergic to tree nuts but want to try both cakes recipes. Would you substitute with shredded coconut or coconut flour?
Hi Emily. You could try it with coconut flour but be wary of the proportions of the other ingredients. I’d use this cake or this one as a template and go from there. G’luck!
